on 12/20/19 the $50 per paycheck dividend portfolio was worth $906.81
(including $3.93 in cash). So far, $850 was sent to M1 Finance to invest into
the portfolio.
That same $850
invested in the Standard and Poor's 500 index would be worth $919.09. Over the
last 16 updates, the dividend portfolio has underperformed the Standard and
Poor's index 14 times.
Apart from the
dividend portfolio being a somewhat random collection of stocks, other reasons
for the divergence in returns include:
- Dividend portfolio is composed only of stocks that pay dividends (no kidding), while S&P 500 has both dividend and non-dividend paying stocks, including a few big ones that make up over 9% of its holdings (Amazon, Facebook, Alphabet). Since late June 2019, the dividend portfolio has collected $9.10 in dividends. Investing in the S&P 500 via the Vanguard VOO ETF would have garnered $3.66. This will change the next time VOO pays a dividend, but the dividend portfolio will still be ahead.
- The dividend portfolio has international stocks, but the S&P 500 doesn't.
- The market capitalization of the dividend portfolio is smaller than the S&P because it includes mid-caps and small-caps while the S&P 500 is a large cap index.
